A Christmas Classic Comes to a Classic Venue by Diane Willard, Director

I love National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story as much  as the next person. And don’t get me started about joy of the animated Christmas spe cials. But the Christmas classics are stories that have withstood the test of time and  touch the heart. And one of the best of these family-friendly classics is Valentine Da vies’ Miracle on 34th Street. This timeless story is a perfect match for the timeless  venue of the Palmer Opera House.

Part of the fun of putting together this show has been melding the acting talents  of veterans of the stage with the youthful enthusiasm of several members of the Ruth  Davis Summer Theatre Youth Camp. The five adults in the show have 136 combined  years in theatre and use that experience to infuse their characters with warmth and

depth while at the same time helping the younger cast members with their acting skills  and character development. The outcome is a charming story young and old are sure  to enjoy.

The story revolves around an older gentleman who, when an emergency arises,  volunteers to play Santa Claus in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. He soon finds  himself playing Santa in Macy’s Santaland, until his boss discovers this man who calls  himself Kris Kringle believes he is the real Santa Claus. After many ups and downs,  Kris finds himself on trial to prove his sanity to avoid being locked in an institution.  Throughout these events, Kris befriends a woman and her daughter who have deep  rooted skepticism in the Santa Claus “fairy tale” and he takes it upon himself to open  their hearts to the joy of Santa and Christmas.

The show is due to open at Cuba’s Palmer Opera House during the Smalltown  Christmas Day celebration on December 7th, with one show at 2pm and one at 7pm. A  final performance will take place on December 8th at 2pm. Contact Michele Conklin at  the Opera House to get tickets in advance, or find the link to buy tickets on the Palmer  website and Facebook page.
